5–10% of dogs in the US are hearing-impaired. Some dogs lose their hearing as they age, while others are born deaf. Hereditary deafness is frequently caused by a cochleosaccular gene mutation. The likelihood of this type of deafness is higher in dogs with white coats and blue eyes.
Blu the pit bull is white-coated and has piercing blue eyes. Blu is mute.
In an animal shelter, she went unchecked day after day.
Fortunately, coworkers Mark and Sean were looking to adopt a deaf dog near San Francisco. At Family Dog Rescue, two were discovered. Among them was Blu.
When Mark and Sean first saw her at the shelter, she was lively and brimming with life. She immediately felt a deep connection to Sean, according to Mark, and the rest is pretty much history, he told GeoBeats Animals.
Blu’s original owners contacted them to inform them that he had been residing with them for six years. Blu was placed in a shelter when they had to move into a rental property that does not allow pit bulls.
Blu was among those who stayed at the refuge the longest.
Because she had been alone for a long time, it took her some time to feel at ease around her new dads.
Blu questioned whether they intended to send her back to the shelter and what their plans were for her.
She was actually frightened on the first vehicle excursion we took her on to the beach, a few days after we purchased her.
She was merely shuddering in the back, Mark remarked.
Blu’s personality reportedly developed as she felt more at ease around Mark and Sean.
After receiving a lot of love and attention, Blu still enjoys driving three years later.
Mark and Sean’s love and longing were made known to Blu.
Since they and Blu have become so close, they each have their own distinctive way of communicating.
Blu can tell where they’re going by observing her father’s motions and even sniffs their feet while out for a stroll.
I guess you could say she is my spirit animal. She can tell me when she’s stressed, joyful, or depressed. We just have a good sense of one another, Sean added.
Blu notices that Mark and Sean’s fingers are wriggling as indicators that she is doing okay. Her anxiety is reduced by Sean’s steely look.
In addition, they worked with a trainer to show Blu relaxation methods like stretching.
Blu doesn’t alter her behavior or interactions with her new owners since she is deaf.
Mark claims that only Blu’s capacity to form bonds with other dogs is impacted.
According to Mark, neither she nor my previous deaf dogs were able to pick up on many of the subtle linguistic signs that canines use to communicate with one another.
Deaf dogs can still hear with their hearts. “I don’t think I’d ever not have a deaf dog because they’re so special and great,” Sean remarked.
They claimed that Blue is unaffected by holidays that feature fireworks, which are typically unpopular with dogs.
Being able to see how much Blu means to Mark and Sean is lovely.
Additionally, it is clear that the emotion is reciprocal. Blu appears to be content with her new family, joyful, and in good health. We are overjoyed that Blu has found a home of her own to call her new dad’s.
