Nearly a year has passed since Shohei Ohtani made headlines by signing a historic contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a move that ended what was intended to be a low-profile negotiation but instead turned into a full-blown media spectacle. The process, which culminated in Ohtani agreeing to a $700-million deal with the Dodgers, was marred by a wave of misinformation that temporarily had the baseball world convinced he was heading to Toronto to join the Blue Jays.

Ohtani’s agent, Nez Balelo, recently revisited those chaotic days, reflecting on how misinformation had derailed their attempts to keep negotiations under wraps. He specifically addressed the incorrect reports that claimed Ohtani was on a flight to Toronto, a rumor that caused a frenzy among Blue Jays fans and the entire country of Canada.

“I didn’t want what happened to create a frenzy in the country of Canada,” Balelo told USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. “These are good people, quality people, and for the journalist to do what he did was so reckless. It hurt the organization, the fans of the organization, and the country of Canada.”

Balelo went on to describe the immediate aftermath of the erroneous reports, noting how the situation affected not just the Blue Jays but other organizations that were still in the mix for Ohtani’s services. “Organizations we were still having discussions with reached out to me, and I said, ‘No, I’m not on a plane to Toronto. Shohei is not on a plane to Toronto. We are here.’ The only organization that didn’t reach out to me was Toronto. They knew I wasn’t on a plane.”

Balelo expressed genuine empathy for the Toronto fans and the Blue Jays organization, recognizing the excitement and hope the false reports had generated. “I felt really bad for the fans, the organization, and the country because, for a minute there, they all felt he was coming. That was the biggest disappointment in the process. Everything was so seamless, so good, and for that to happen was really unfortunate.”

Despite the media circus, Balelo praised the Los Angeles Dodgers for the professionalism they exhibited throughout the negotiations.

He highlighted their understanding of Ohtani’s true value and the impact he could have, both on and off the field. “Look where it got them,” Balelo said, alluding to the immediate success the Dodgers found with Ohtani on their roster.

Indeed, the Dodgers’ first season with Ohtani was nothing short of remarkable. Not only did they win the World Series, but they also experienced a surge in fan support, leading Major League Baseball in attendance and achieving the second-highest attendance in Dodger Stadium history, as reported by Dodgers Blue’s Matthew Moreno.

The combination of Ohtani’s exceptional talent and the Dodgers’ storied franchise created a buzz that resonated throughout the league.

Ohtani himself reflected on his debut season with the Dodgers, expressing satisfaction with how everything had unfolded. “This exceeded my expectations,” Ohtani said. “Obviously, it was the first time I made the playoffs. We won the World Series. What more can you ask for?”

The saga of Shohei Ohtani’s signing with the Dodgers will be remembered as a high-stakes drama that captivated fans across North America.

While the confusion surrounding his potential move to Toronto created temporary heartbreak for Blue Jays fans, the end result was a win for the Dodgers, who successfully brought in one of the most dynamic players in the game.

Ohtani’s historic contract and the Dodgers’ triumphant season are a testament to the power of perseverance and the allure of playing for a team that understands both the player and the magnitude of his contributions.
