Sergio Garcia’s love for the Ryder Cup has been revealed by one of his former captains Paul McGinley, with the Spaniard gunning to make a return to the matchplay event in 2025.
Nobody has won more points on the Ryder Cup stage than Garcia, with the Spaniard announcing himself a stalwart of the European team throughout his career. His time with Team Europe came to an end last year though, after Garcia resigned his membership from the DP World Tour.
Garcia was one of a number of LIV Golf players to quit the European circuit in 2023, after they were fined and sanctioned for competing in ‘conflicting’ events with the breakaway league.

The Spaniard had racked up over $1 million in fines, but keen to return to the Ryder Cup for 2025, the Fireballs captain has now paid off his sanctions and reapplied for DP World Tour membership. Due to his LIV loyalties, Garcia will more than likely be relying on a captain’s pick from Luke Donald to make the team at Bethpage Black.
And it seems if Donald is looking for passion, then the returning LIV golfer may well be a smart pick if his previous showings are anything to go by. Speaking on the newly-released ‘Una Famiglia’, a documentary covering Europe’s Ryder Cup win in Italy last year, McGinley spoke of Garcia’s obsession with the event.
“I remember Sergio Garcia jumping around the team room on Ryder Cup week,” the former winning captain told the documentary cameras. “Not only would he play 36 holes, but afterward he would be in the team room with his dinner on his lap watching the highlights on TV.”

Donald – who is returning as captain in the United States after victory last year – spoke of Garcia’s return during an interview with Mirror Sports last week. “The more people I have to choose from at Bethpage, the better,” the former world No. 1 commented.
“But I’ve always said that any player has to follow all the rules and regulations of the DP World Tour like everyone else, and if Sergio does that then he can play his way into contention. He’s now paid fines and taken up membership of the DP World Tour for 2025, so that’s an important step taken for him.”
Whilst a captain’s pick appears the most likely route for Garcia to New York, however, the Spanish star has set his sights on playing his way in automatically by performing well at the major championships and his chosen DP World Tour events. “Hopefully I play so well in the majors and in the European Tour events that I don’t need a pick,” he told Bunkered. “That’s my goal.”
