The Pittsburgh Steelers have indicated that they might have already made their decision to re-sign Russell Wilson for the 2025 season, with the writing seemingly on the wall for Justin Fields.

Wilson, who turns 37 next year, is set to become a free agent at the end of the season with Pittsburgh needing a long-term answer at the quarterback position. But after seeing what he’s been able to do so far this year, the organization is reportedly keen to bring him back next season, NFL.com has reported.

Wilson had started the season as back-up after struggling with injuries throughout training camp, meaning Fields had been the starter – where he had impressed throwing five touchdowns to just one interception while leading the Steelers to a 4-2 start. However, the offense run through Fields had struggled to get the best out of Pittsburgh’s emerging superstar wide receiver George Pickens – with Tomlin opting to play Wilson despite Fields’ impressive record.

That made has paid off, with Wilson having a 5-1 record as a starter, with his only loss coming against the Cleveland Browns in inclement conditions last month.

Wilson has turned his career around after two nightmare seasons with the Denver Broncos after the mega-trade with the Seattle Seahawks to acquire him, with Pittsburgh unlocking his best play as fans had been used to seeing play him when in Seattle.

And despite his age, the Steelers might even be willing to sign him to a multi-year deal, with the veteran quarterback notoriously taking care of his body while wanting to play into his 40’s – spending over $1 million per year on home equipment to keep him in the best condition.

Fields will be certain to be disappointed by the news, but he’ll also be likely to draw significant interest when he becomes a free agent this offseason after his strong performances earlier in the season. A number of NFL teams are likely to be looking for a starter, with Fields’ rushing ability utilized at a high level in recent years, with his inconsistencies as a passer letting him down.

The Steelers currently sit atop of the AFC North with Wilson quarterbacking them, looking to secure the division ahead of the Baltimore Ravens.
