The New England Patriots finished their 2023 season with a 4-13 record which led to the departure of former first-round pick Mac Jones and six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach and de facto general manager Bill Belichick.

Less than a year later, New England, in their first season with Jerod Mayo and Eliot Wolf running the show, are fighting to reach that four-win mark again.

Mayo’s first season as head coach hasn’t been great, as the team has struggled to see positive results and growth throughout the year, but he knows that 2025 will be his year.

“I still have a lot to learn… I tell the players the same thing,” Mayo said on Tom Curran’s “Patriots Talk” podcast last week. “The biggest jump you’ll ever have in your career is from year one to year two. As far as becoming a better player, a better professional. I’m sure, 100%, I will be a better coach in year two than I am in year one.”

A first year this bad is tough to overcome and many have questioned whether or not Mayo should return for a second at all. However, considering Patriots owner Robert Kraft’s affection for Mayo, it’s hard to imagine the franchise moving on so soon.

Mayo will have to make that big leap that he’s talking about because another season at the bottom of the league could lead Kraft to make a change sooner than they’d like to.
