Netflix’s acclaimed spy thriller The Recruit might be getting axed, with network chiefs considering canceling it just a month after its second season dropped.
The eagerly anticipated follow-up landed in January after its 2022 debut, boasting an impressive 97 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Starring Noah Centineo as Owen Hendricks, a rookie CIA lawyer entangled in the spy world, the Netflix show has hit a snag in viewership, struggling against newer series like The Night Agent and the comedy XO Kitty.
While these shows have secured third seasons, The Recruit’s fate hangs in the balance, with no renewal confirmation yet.
Viewership for the second season reportedly dipped by two million compared to its initial episodes, per What’s On Netflix. Nonetheless, showrunner Alexi Hawley is hopeful, saying, “We’re waiting for Netflix to officially do their thing with it.”
He added to Deadline, “There’s a lot of goodwill inside Netflix towards the show and towards Noah; I think they very much feel like Noah is a homegrown star, which he is. So, I’m feeling super positive about it, as positive as you can feel in this town at this time.”
Alexi revealed potential future filming locations, saying, “Maybe Latin America, Africa would be exciting. The American audiences don’t get exposed to Africa a lot in our storytelling for lots of reasons, but I think that would be really interesting.”
Fans are also eagerly awaiting the show’s renewal, taking to social media to share their reactions after season two’s release. One fan raved, “Yep… The Recruit season 2 has definitely delivered. Best character of Noah Centineo’s so far.”
Another enthused, “Thank you, The Recruit season 2. That was CINEMA!” A third fan wrote, “The Recruit Season 2 is the most fun I’ve had watching TV in a very long time!”
However, another fan expressed disappointment over the reduced episode count, saying, “Super excited to watch The Recruit season 2 on @netflix until I realized it was only six episodes…WTH y’all want to hit us with a price increase but all the seasons are getting less and less episodes. Stop with this.”
