Netflix just added a crime thriller from the creator behind hit series Yellowstone.
Taylor Sheridan’s ‘masterpiece’ has now been added as part of the streaming giant’s extensive library of titles. Sheridan, the creative genius behind the hit show and its spin-offs 1883 and 1928, as well as other TV series like Landman, Tulsa King, and Mayor of Kingstown, penned the screenplay for Sicario before these successes.
The film is now readily accessible for Netflix subscribers. Sheridan, is also known for his acting roles as Travis Wheatley in Yellowstone and David Hale in Sons of Anarchy, wrote the script for the 2015 release. Surrey Live reports Denis Villeneuve directed the film as a follow-up to Prisoners and later directed Dune parts one and two and Blade Runner 2049.
Sicario features a stellar cast, including Emily Blunt, Benicio del Toro, Josh Brolin, Jon Bernthal, and Daniel Kaluuya. The film’s title translates to “In Mexico, Sicario means hitman.”
It continues: “In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, an idealistic FBI agent (Blunt) is enlisted by an elite government task force official to aid in the escalating war against drugs. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past, the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive.”
Critics and moviegoers have lavished the film with acclaim, leading to its stellar 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. One reviewer asserted: “Taylor Sheridan has written some of the most underappreciated crime movies of the 21st Century, a run that kicked off with this film.” Another critic announced: “One of the most brutal, effective thrillers in recent memory.”
A fan shared online that the writer-director duo was a match made in cinematic heaven: “This is what you are rewarded with when you pair Denis Villeneuve and Taylor Sheridan. You get this intoxicating and beautifully made film about a subject matter so disturbing and a cartel underworld.”
They elaborated: “It’s so brutal that you can’t help but feel so unsettled because you feel like you’re actually there when you shouldn’t be, like you’re a fly on the wall. When they say, ‘they don’t make ’em like they used to’, I say; ‘You might be right, but at least there’s films like this out there’.”
Yet another voiced: “Great acting, great storyline and great direction. This is a compelling movie that is brutal and believable and will keep you on the edge of your seat. Do yourself a big favour and watch this flick.” Adding to the chorus, one enthusiast remarked: “Talk about one of the most exciting, greatest movies of all-time. The acting, cinematography, sound, music, everything was incredible.”
The film indeed prompted a sequel titled Sicario: Day of the Soldado, scripted once again by Sheridan but under the guidance of a different director. Although it didn’t capture hearts as much as the original did, fans still reminisce about the first movie’s impact.
One fan shared: “This movie was so engaging that I wanted more even after two hours runtime. Realistic depiction of what can become of a place ruled by faulty people. And yet choosing the lesser evil to fight evil.”
