The Seattle Seahawks were hit with some shocking news on Wednesday, as star wide receiver DK Metcalf requested a trade out of Seattle after having a series of conversations with the organization over the last few weeks. Metcalf has just one year left on his contract and would like to be traded to a contender. The former Ole Miss standout also wants a new deal from the team that he is moved to.
The Seahawks also released franchise legend and wide receiver Tyler Lockett on Wednesday. Lockett spent ten seasons with the franchise and posted four 1,000-yard campaigns.
Seattle moving on from Lockett and likely Metcalf signals the end of an era in the wide receiver room. The team will now heavily rely on Jaxon Smith-Njigba to carry the load, as the 2023 first-round pick had a breakout 2024 campaign, hauling in 100 receptions for 1,130 yards and six touchdowns.
Smith-Njigba will likely serve as the Seahawks’ No.1 wide receiver next season and will see increased opportunities, but the former Ohio State was shocked by the news regarding Metcalf and Lockett.
“Ayooo wtf,” Smith-Njigba tweeted after hearing the news of Metcalf’s trade request and Lockett’s release.
At their best, Metcalf and Lockett were one of the most versatile wide receiver duos in football and were the engines of the Seahawks’ passing attack. Seattle saved $17 million by cutting Lockett and will save $10.8 million with a $21 million dead cap charge if they trade Metcalf before Jun.1.
Smith-Njigba’s reaction to the news was everyone’s instant thoughts, as the Seahawks’ offense will look a lot different moving forward without Lockett and Metcalf.
