Karla Sofia Gascón was spotted on the red carpet for the first time since she was embroiled in controversy over resurfaced tweets. The Spanish actress attended the 50th annual Cesar Awards in Paris on Feb 28 after keeping a low profile.
Karla, who is up for Best Actress for her work in Emilia Pérez, is the first openly transgender person to be nominated for an acting award at the Academy Awards and is expected to appear at the ceremony on Sunday.
The milestone has been unfortunately eclipsed by resurfaced tweets made by Karla that included racist and islamophobic comments and even one tweet attacking her co-star.

The 52-year-old was absent for the Critics’ Choice Awards, the BAFTAs, the SAG Awards, as well as for the Oscar class photo.
In her return to the red carpet, she attended the French film awards wearing a long sleeve black gown with asymmetrical neckline. She appeared to be escorted by two security guards as she skipped the press line and headed straight inside.
During the ceremony, she sat in the same row as director Jacques Audiard and co-star Zoe Saldaña, but was not seated next to them. Emilia Pérez was nominated for 12 awards and ended the evening with 7 wins, including Best Film.
The show’s host, French actor Jean-Pascal Zadi, joked during his opening monologue that the musical crime drama was “nominated for best director, best film, best actress and best tweet,” which was met with a mix of gasps and laughter.
The tweets in question, some as recent as 2021, featured criticism of the Black Lives Matter movement, Islam, and even the Oscars, calling it an “ugly, ugly gala.” In another resurfaced post, she allegedly referred to her Emilia Perez co-star Selena Gomez as a “rich rat.”
In the midst of the controversy, Karla went on a rogue apology tour that seemed to hurt her case more than help, including an hour-long interview on CNN en Español, where she claimed that the resurfaced posts were part of a concerted effort to sway the vote and keep her from winning Best Actress at the Oscars.
As she was focusing on damage control, including an Instagram apology, her co-stars and the film’s director distanced themselves from her and the controversy, with Zoe Saldaña saying: “I dont have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group.”
After speculation that she would skip the Oscars, it has been confirmed that the actress will be in attendance, with Netflix footing the bill.
