There was a lot happening in the NFL world on Wednesday as things continue to heat up with free agency one week away. One of the major things to occur was star wide receiver DK Metcalf reportedly requesting a trade from the Seattle Seahawks.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Metcalf requested a trade after talking it over with the Seahawks over the past few weeks. Metcalf’s desire to be traded stems from his wanting to join a contender, Schefter notes.
There has been plenty of rumors and speculation surrounding Metcalf possibly getting traded, even before his reported demand. Now, business is about to pick up and it may not be long before Metcalf is shipped off to a new team. The Seahawks are reportedly expected to explore trading him following his request.
With that in mind, analysts from different media outlets have begun pondering where he could land, and Sportsnaut’s Matt Johnson believes the Kansas City Chiefs could be a landing spot.
“Even with DeAndre Hopkins, the Chiefs didn’t have enough playmakers who could take the game over in their Super Bowl loss,” Johnson wrote. “Now Hopkins is set for free agency, which means the Chiefs will need a replacement and Metcalf is the best upgrade they’ll find.”
As Johnson mentions, the Chiefs have a major need at wide receiver. Hopkins and Marquise Brown are both set to hit free agency, and the Chiefs didn’t have much success with either one.
Hopkins didn’t make the impact Kansas City expected over his tenure, and Brown was forced to miss most of the season due to an injury. Even if one is brought back, Kansas City could use more help.
Metcalf would be just what the doctor ordered. The 27-year-old would be the best receiver all-world quarterback Patrick Mahomes has had since Tyreek Hill was traded, and he would form a lethal trio with Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy.
And, Mahomes would obviously be the best quarterback Metcalf has ever caught passes from and that could lead to career-best production from him.
Because of his age and talent, Metcalf isn’t going to be cheap, even with him being in the final year of his contract. It’s likely going to take a high draft pick, at least, to acquire the former second-round pick. From there, the Chiefs will likely look to extend him so as to ensure he won’t bolt in 2026.
With the Chiefs looking to reload after a failed Super Bowl bid, and with their dire need at the wide receiver position, Kansas City absolutely should make a play for Metcalf.
