Deion Sanders took to social media to congratulate son Shedeur after the Colorado quarterback was named the winner of the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm award.
Since becoming the head coach of Colorado, Deion has emerged as one of the noisiest and most prominent names in college football. His son and quarterback Shedeur has impressed for the Buffaloes since transferring from Jackson State, steadily building his stock.
Across the 2024 season, Shedeur has thrown for 3,926 yards and 35 touchdowns with eight interceptions on a 74.2 percent completion rate. He also rushed for four scores on 91 carries in 12 games, leading Colorado to a 9-3 record (7-2 Big 12).
Shedeur is projected to come off the board early and could even be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft as, alongside Floridas Cam Ward, the 22-year-old represents the most intriguing quarterback prospect on offer. On Friday, Shedeur was the was named the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which is given annually to the nation’s top upperclassman quarterback in college football.
Deion posted a tribute on Instagram with the caption: Congratulations Son. Im PROUD of u. Your speech was awesome, especially starting it with thanking the LORD. #Dad/#CoachPrime
In his acceptance speech, Shedeur began by speaking of his faith and thanked the committee for recognizing his efforts. He said: I just want to thank God for this opportunity. It was tough looking back, just being at HBCU, coming to Power 5.
People dont respect how you played, they dont respect the things you did not because of me, but because of Pops, because of Dad. They just didnt like him.

Shedeur, who was also named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, is likely yet to play his final game for Colorado. Following the Buffaloes crushing 52-0 win over Oklahoma State on Nov. 29, Sanders expects his high-profile senior stars – like Shedeur and Heisman Trophy contender Travis Hunter – to feature in the programs bowl game later this month.
The players will then turn their attention to preparing for the NFL Draft with workouts, pro days, and the combine to come. The bowl will likely be the last time Shedeur plays under his father.
Rumors are suggesting Sanders could dictate where he wants Shedeur to play a la Eli Manning and John Elway. Back in July, though, Sanders told reporters he would be happy with Shedeur going to the Las Vegas Raiders.
I love what (Antonio Pierce) brings to the table, Sanders said. I dont want him to lose to the point where he has the ability to get Shedeur. Lets get that straight. I dont want that to happen, I really dont, but I wouldnt mind if, some kind of way, it happens that (Shedeur) is here.
