Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty has reignited the race for the Heisman Trophy after helping the Broncos advance to the College Football Playoffs with a 21-7 win over UNLV.
Jeanty rushed for 209 yards and one touchdown in the Mountain West Championship Game, with his score coming off a 75-yard carry. With a season total of 2,497 yards, the running back is now closing in on Barry Sanders’ NCAA single-season rushing record (2,628), and his odds of winning the Heisman Trophy shifted drastically during the game.
Ahead of Friday’s championship game, per DraftKings Sportsbook, Jeanty’s odds were +1300 but dropped to +400 by halftime following his 75-yard touchdown. Travis Hunter, Colorado wide receiver/cornerback, entered Friday as a -5000 favorite but is now priced at -700 to win the prestigious award.
Hunter has been a heavy favorite for most of this season, due to his status as one of the top players in two different positions. But with Jeanty closing in on a record year and Boise State charging into the playoffs, the race is very much on.

“Give this man the Heisman! His determination is first class and he will be a problem in the CFB Playoffs,” one fan wrote on social media. “I know everyone is excited about Travis Hunter but he is a bad man and put the Boise State brand to its highest level in college football in years!”
“If you think Travis Hunter should win the Heisman over Ashton Jeanty, you don’t know ball,” another added. “I think this game could have a big say in who wins the Heisman this year,” one fan claimed.
Jeanty now has 2,497 rushing yards this season and 30 total touchdowns (29 rushing), in a year where he’s already set the Mountain West Conference single-season rushing record and also broke the single-season scrimmage yards record for the Broncos. Jeanty needs just 131 more yards to break Sanders’ 36-year record, and the College Football Hall of Famer is rooting for him.
“Hey @AshtonJeanty2 – Wishing you luck tonight,” Sanders wrote on X before Friday’s game. “My fans can gripe, but records are made to be broken & I am rooting for you. I love seeing all these @NFL and @NCAA #RBs showing the value of the position. #RunTheRock.”
Hunter has also had a memorable season for the Buffaloes both on offense and defense, and as a result is averaging 114 snaps per game. As a wide receiver, Hunter has 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns this season, while also rushing for a single score.
As a cornerback, Hunter has 81 total tackles and four interceptions, and his versatility has seen him play 1,102 snaps. Unlike Jeanty, who can bolster his stats for as long as Boise State is in the College Football Playoffs, Hunter will have one final game to make his case for the Heisman Trophy.
Colorado is predicted to face BYU in the Alamo Bowl, but could also feature in the Holiday Bowl against ACC opponents such as Miami, Clemson, Syracuse, or SMU. For Hunter, winning the Heisman Trophy would mean everything.
“It would mean a lot to me because, in my family, I’m the oldest out of all my siblings,” Hunter said on ‘SportsCenter‘ ahead of Week 15. “So, it’s going to mean a lot to them and I know it’s going to mean a lot to me.”
