Actor Harry Hamlin said he is ‘very happy’ after giving up alcohol for a year, while acknowledging his past struggles with an addiction to drugs including Ambien
Actor Harry Hamlin celebrated the one-year milestone since he stopped drinking as he opened up about his “whole new world.”
The Mad Men star marked the occasion with his wife, Lisa Rinna, on an episode of his Let’s Not Talk About the Husband podcast, where he recalled the effect of drink and drugs on his life.
Hamlin, 73, said it “wasn’t that big of deal” that he decided to stop drinking, adding that it was “not difficult for me at all.” It began when his wife started teasing him about wearing the same pair of pants. He told Rinna, 62, the he “lost a considerable amount of weight” as a result of sobriety and intermittent fasting and they are the only ones that still fit him well.
“I’m very happy,” he explained. “I was always tempted to have a glass of wine in the evening, have some liquor to go to sleep.”
Hamlin said he had previously stopped drinking “many times” through the years, including a four-year sober stint in the 2010s. He initially gave up booze on his own before joining Alcoholics Anonymous for support. He said, “One of the greatest gifts that I ever got was doing that for that four-year period.”
He admitted he was still taking Ambien during that time, which he says is a “deadly drug.” Hamlin went on, Its a whole new world when you dont use anything to numb yourself out.
He added, “It is what it is. Its not that big a deal in my life, by the way. For a lot of people, stopping drinking is a huge deal. For me, its something Im happy about doing.
Hamlin noted that his two brothers were alcoholics and both died from complications related to smoking and drinking, so he likes to stay on top of his own alcohol usage.
Rinna said Hamlin wasn’t drinking when the couple initially met. They were married in 1997 and together raised their daughters Delilah Bell and Amelia Gray. Hamlin also had a son, Dimitri, 45, with Ursula Andress.
