It’s no secret the Buffalo Bills are hoping to bolster their pass rush this offseason, be it through free agency or the upcoming draft.
General Manager Brandon Beane flirted with the idea of trading the No. 30 pick for a big-name player at last week’s NFL Combine, but the Bills might be able to fill the void through free agency by signing the recently released Joey Bosa instead.
The 2016 Defensive Rookie of the Year was cut from the Chargers on Wednesday on the back of another injury-plagued season, starting in only nine games after battling hip and back problems.
Bosa’s injury history stretches right back to 2016 when he missed three games with a hamstring complaint, while his most notable injury occurred in 2022 when he missed 12 games on IR with a core muscle tear.
All up, the nine-year pro has missed 23 games over the last three seasons.
The Bills have been among the favorites to potentially swing a trade with the Cleveland Browns for Myles Garrett, but with the asking price high – and the likelihood of said trade dwindling – Beane might be better off signing a high-risk, high reward player like Bosa on the cheap.
According to Over The Cap, the Bills have just over $9.7 million in cap space to play with. Whether it’s worth rolling the dice on the 29-year-old Bosa is up for debate, but there’s no denying when right, he’s still capable of disrupting the pocket and bringing opposing quarterbacks to the turf.
In the nine games he started last year, Bosa accounted for five sacks, still showing that same speed and physicality that led the Chargers to draft him third overall way back in 2016.
With Garrett and Khalil Mack commanding a much higher price tag, Buffalo would be remiss not to kick the tyres on the five-time Pro Bowler, providing the two sides can agree on a cost-effective deal.
