Angel Reese continues her meteoric rise as one of the most recognizable names in women’s basketball, making waves in both the WNBA and beyond.
While the league prepares for its upcoming season, Reese has been showcasing her skills in the Unrivaled League, further sharpening her game and expanding her influence both on and off the court. Her journey to this point, however, has been far from conventional.
Growing up in Baltimore, Maryland, Reese was raised by her mother and maternal grandparents. In a recent podcast appearance, the 22-year-old reflected on her childhood and admitted that she wasn’t always the easiest kid to handle.
Reese revealed a particularly mischievous habit—calling the police on her babysitter when she didn’t want to stay with them.
“My mom used to get p*****. I used to call the police on my babysitter. I was calling the police on her. I didn’t want to stay there. I didn’t want her watching me. That’s why,” Reese shared, laughing at the memory.
But it wasn’t just the babysitter who had to deal with young Reese’s strong-willed nature. She and her brother also gave their mother plenty of headaches. According to Reese, their behavior once reached a breaking point that led to a drastic move from their mom.
“Me and my brother, I guess, were so bad. She acts like she drafted paperwork to send us to foster home. We were on our best behavior ever since,” Reese recalled.
Finding a Path Through Basketball
Though she may have been a handful as a child, Reese ultimately found discipline and direction through basketball. Her natural talent was evident early on, as she excelled in youth leagues and at high school. Her abilities earned her a spot at the University of Maryland, where she played for two seasons before transferring to LSU.
It was at LSU that Reese solidified her place as a basketball superstar. She played a pivotal role in the Tigers’ 2023 national championship run, leading them to victory over Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Her fierce competitive spirit and confident persona made her a fan favorite and a key figure in the growing popularity of women’s basketball.
Following her collegiate success, Reese made the leap to the WNBA, where she was drafted by the Chicago Sky. But even during the WNBA offseason, she has remained active, currently playing for Rose BC in the Unrivaled League, a new platform that showcases top women’s basketball talent.
Embracing Basketball and Business
Beyond her skills on the court, Reese has also embraced the financial opportunities that come with being a modern-day athlete. She has become one of the most marketable young stars in women’s basketball, landing endorsement deals and growing her brand through social media.
Her passion for basketball and business was summed up perfectly in a recent social media post where she wrote: “I can’t never stop making money ‘cause I love to ball REESE.”
From an energetic and rebellious child to a national champion and professional athlete, Angel Reese’s journey has been one of growth, perseverance, and self-discovery. And if her trajectory so far is any indication, she’s only just getting started.
