BREAKING NEWS: Bill Belichick’s feelings on college football job emerge as North Carolina makes move.giang

Former New England Patriots mainstay Bill Belichick is “seriously considering” the head coach vacancy at North Carolina after interviewing for the college football post.

The 72-year-old boasts one of the most decorated CVs in the sport, having masterminded six Super Bowl wins as HC with the Patriots, alongside two more as defensive co-ordinator with the New York Giants. However, he has been out of the game since his departure from Gillette Stadium in January after a storied 24-year spell.

In the time since leaving his role with the Patriots, Belichick has become a regular on the broadcasting circuit with appearances on ‘Manningcast and ‘The Pat MacAfee Show’ this season. Now, it has been claimed that the veteran figure is locked in talks with representatives of the University of North Carolina (UNC) about potentially assuming the reins as the new head coach of the Tar Heels.

It was first reported by Inside Carolina that Belichick had been in discussions with UNC following the firing of coach Mack Brown on Nov. 26. Following on from this, CBS Sports then claimed that the former Patriots hero had sat down with Tar Heels representatives for a second time in New York City this week.

Now, it has been revealed that Belichick is open to the possibility of taking a college football job, with Pete Thamel saying on ESPN: “This is something that Bill Belichick has seriously considered, and he’s done a deep dive on UNC and returning to college. For right now, sources cast this as unlikely, so we’ll just say, it is what it is.”

Meanwhile, The News and Observer’s Andrew Carter also claimed on X that Belichick’s interest in the post is “high and genuine”, while purporting that he “blew away” UNC representatives during their meetings. However, he reported that it is “extremely unlikely” that the 72-year-old will get the job due to his age and relative lack of college football experience.

Having been out of work for the majority of 2024, the legend has been linked with a number of vacancies and is understood to have interviewed for the Atlanta Falcons head coach job previously. Intriguingly, Belichick has spoken with enthusiasm about college football in the past – with son Steve currently serving as Washington’s defensive coordinator.

Revealing his admiration for the Huskies after watching them in practice, he once told Pat McAfee: “They do a great job here at this program. It’s just fun to see what’s going on, sit in on some meetings, and watch the players work. It’s a good spot out here and a great environment.”

He added: “Jedd’s [Fisch] got the whistle, I’m just here to watch, and sometimes they ask me to look at something or what I think about this or that. It’s really great to see these guys and Jedd’s got a great staff and is doing a great job with this program.”
