The Kansas City Chiefs squeaked by the Los Angeles Chargers 17-16 as kicker Matthew Wright’s 31-year field goal doinked off the goal post and in as time expired.

Head coach Andy Reid cracked a wry smile and hugged running back Isiah Pacheco. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes raised his hands over his helmet in utter disbelief as the Chiefs pulled the rabbit out of the hat once again: Kansas City has now won an NFL record 15 one-score games in a row.

The win clinches the AFC West for the 12-1 Chiefs and puts them in poll position to lock up the AFC’s top seed after the 10-3 Buffalo Bills surprising defeat at the hands of the 7-6 Los Angeles Rams.

The Chiefs seemingly find a new painstakingly stressful way to win every week. NBC commentator Mike Tirico called Wright’s kick on Sunday a ” Bank shot for the division.”

To recap some of Kansas City’s weird wins.: in Week 1, Baltimore Ravens tight Isaiah Likely’s game-tying touchdown as time expired was ruled out of bounds by inches. Kansas City prevailed in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals and Week 9 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on walk-off scores.

Week 10 takes the cake for the most unlikely win: Leo Chanel blocked Will Lutz’s game-winning field goal attempt as time expired to preserve the victory.

The Chiefs needed a game-winning drive to top the lowly Carolina Panthers in Week 12 and relied on a botched snap that knocked the Las Vegas Raiders out of field-goal range in Week 13 on Black Friday.

In this dramatic victory, Mahomes once again did not have a signature statistical showing. The 29-year-old completed 24 of his 37 passes for 210 yards and a touchdown while adding another 17 yards on the ground.

As usual, the former NFL MVP made it matter when it counts. With his team trailing 17-16 with 4:35 in the fourth, he calmly piloted a 14-play, 47-yard drive to march his side into the red zone.

It seems like each Kansas City game features a timely Mahomes scramble and Sunday was no different: he somehow evaded the Chargers rush to scramble for 10 yards and a first down in opposing territory to keep the drive alive. User Amroensam on X deemed it a “Mahomes devil scramble.”

The loss sends the Chargers to 8-5 and eliminates them from AFC West contention, but Jim Harbaugh’s men are still alive in the wild-card hunt. They would finish as the conference’s sixth seed and face the Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs if the season ended today.
